In an instant, my niece and her hubby were terribly injured, and their toddler was gone. Sitting in that hospital room, all seemed so very dark. Not that he was able to "fix" all things, but James brought hope into that sad atmosphere. He opened his heart to the suffering; a risky personal thing for a nurse. His help was not only physical but emotional. James acted as an interpreter when we didn't understand the medical aspect of the ever-changing news. He became that familiar face who faithfully stuck his head in the door to our downheartedness.
I will never forget the impact that James made during my family's worst nightmare. It made the sorrow almost bearable because he made a connection with my niece. Her tomorrows will be very different from her yesterdays, but James was able to encourage her to believe that in time the current excruciating pain in her heart will become a lifelong ache, but she will be able to go on.
James made a difference; something each of us would like to be able to do in our lifetime.
