Jason has worked on the oncology floor as a nurse for 17 years. He is a leader and mentor for his floor. He often works as the charge nurse or preceptor. I like to think of Jason as a quiet crusader because he doesn't stand in the spotlight or call attention to himself; he simply does what is right for the right reasons.
One such example is of a night when the oncology floor had very high acuity and multiple chemo administrations with limited chemo-certified nurses available. CVCU had a patient that required a lengthy chemo administration with frequent titrations needed. This particular chemo tends to cause hypersensitive reactions and requires a skilled RN to safely administer. As house supervisor, I was faced with the challenge of trying to help 5N figure out how they would safely deliver chemo to all the patients. I reached out to my manager (who happens to be Jason's wife). When Jason learned of the situation he eagerly stepped in to help problem solve. Realizing that the patient's chemo would be delayed if we didn't have a nurse available, Jason volunteered himself to come in and give the chemo. Jason normally works dayshift and it was late at night but he didn't even hesitate. He rose to the occasion and was here through the night into the early morning. The entire time Jason was patient first focused. I never suggested that he come in. He took it upon himself to get out of bed late at night because he knew a patient needed him. I feel that Jason's actions are DAISY worthy because while we would all like to think that we would be there for a patient, this really stands out because Jason got out of bed late at night to come to the rescue of a patient in need.
