This speaks volumes about Jayleen’s care and compassion and how hard she works to care holistically for her patients by addressing their emotional and psychosocial needs.
Jayleen Malley’s caring heart is one that she shares with everyone she encounters. She is a compassionate individual, and it shows in her care for her patients and in her interactions with her colleagues. She advocates for her patients and strives for excellence in everything she does. I cannot think of anyone who exudes the characteristics of a DAISY Award winner more than Jayleen.

Recently, I was able to witness Jayleen’s care and compassion. The patient was young and had a traumatic event resulting in a bilateral amputation of his lower limbs. Jayleen noticed that this patient was struggling with the loss of his limbs and the limitations of the visitor’s policy and noticed that these were contributing to him feeling isolated and alone. Jayleen did not want this patient to feel this way any longer, so she took the initiative to help him. She took the time out of her busy day to create a banner in his room that said, “Positive Vibes!” and posted positive affirmations and encouraging words throughout his room, including “Keep rocking your recovery! We are here for you, and you are a superstar!” message on his bathroom door for him to see as a constant reminder of his progress.

The patient and his mother truly appreciated this, as it provided a positive reminder to find the good things every day and that he had his healthcare team supporting him. When I commented on the banner and messages to a staff member, I learned that this was not an isolated occurrence—Jayleen has done this multiple times for patients on the unit who are struggling and need encouragement and support. This speaks volumes about Jayleen’s care and compassion and how hard she works to care holistically for her patients by addressing their emotional and psychosocial needs.

In another situation, Jayleen had floated to provide care to patients who were battling COVID-19. During her shift, one patient had deteriorated and was placed on comfort care. Jayleen advocated for this patient’s final wishes, coordinating with the patient’s priest to have his last rights read to him with his family present over Zoom. Jayleen also took the time to communicate with the family throughout the day on his status and took time to comfort the family during a difficult time. Jayleen’s advocacy, respect, care, and compassion in this situation allowed this patient to pass with dignity.

The patient’s family was extremely appreciative of Jayleen’s care of their loved one, and the care coordination she did to honor his final wishes. Jayleen is a wonderful, compassionate, and caring nurse who makes a difference in every patients’ experience on our unit. She is a truly valued member of our team, and we are very lucky to have her.
