The genuine spirit of a true caregiver was exemplified through Nurse Jeanie who took care of me on my first night's stay at LAC+USC Medical Center. After having a fibroid embolization procedure, and a brief two-night stay, nurse Jeanie was my first overnight RN. When nurse Jeanie checked on me, I remember telling her "thank you" for taking such good care of me. It was a sincere expression of gratitude, as I could feel her compassion. What could have been a cold, sterile encounter in the wee hours of the morning, was warmed by the loving kindness of an authentic medical professional. Salute!

A nurse is a person who is trained to give care to people who are sick or injured and their families on a daily basis. Nurses work with doctors and other healthcare workers to make patients well and to keep them fit and healthy. Nurses also help with end of life needs and assist other family members with grieving. Nurses are the glue that holds the hospital together. A good nurse has many attributes and the way they use them defines what type of nurse they are. An attribute that comes to mind when I think of Jeanie is empathy, which she shows towards her patients. Her patients, like the one that nominated her, were able to feel the compassion as she provided comfort to them. Another attribute is respect. Respect goes a long way. Great nurses respect all people and rules and understand that the patients come first. These types of nurses who respect others are highly respected in return. Another attribute is her communication skills. Communication skills are the basic foundation for any career, but for nursing, it's one of the most important aspects of the job. For being here less than a year, I believe she demonstrates excellent communication skills. She is able to problem-solve and effectively communicate with patients, families and her co-workers.
Congratulations Jeanie on receiving the DAISY Award!
