Several weeks ago when my father was a patient in Medical ICU at Christ, I was privileged to witness a "DAISY Award" ceremony for one of your nurses in that unit. Her name was Susan. It was early in the morning when she received her award with family and friends looking on. We met Susan shortly thereafter as she turned out to be my Dad's nurse for that day. She was a very caring professional. Dad was transferred out of ICU that afternoon to 4West. He received excellent care both in ICU and as a patient on 4West.
The purpose of this letter is to compliment the services of another nurse Jenna Wisner, who was Dad's daytime nurse on 4West for several 12-hour days. Jenna is another talented professional on your nursing staff. Friendly, positive, informative and caring are words I would use to describe Jenna.
At age 101 my dad was certainly one of your oldest patents and at the time his mind was exceptionally clear for someone his age but has very, very limited vision and other physical limitations. In addition to routine care, and important goal for Jenna was to get Dad a water bottle that he could see on his tray table and be able to use easily. She found a bright pink plastic water bottle at Target and brought it on her next shift. Dad could see it and use it easily without spilling water all over himself. A perfect solution to the problem.
Sounds simple, doesn't it? The plastic water bottle wasn't expensive according to Jenna. She wouldn't let me pay for it. The really important issue isn't the cost of the water bottle. The issue that amazed me, and has amazed everyone I've told the story to, is that Jenna saw a problem and took it upon herself to solve it, although it meant giving up her precious personal time off. Selfless dedication would also describe Jenna Wisner.
This event may not qualify for "DAISY Award" status but I couldn't let Jenna's care and extraordinary service go unacknowledged. Please extend my heartfelt thanks to her and the entire 4West staff. Unfortunately after nine days at Christ, Dad was transferred to Hospice and passed away less than 48 hours later. Sometimes even the best care can't overcome age and health issues.
