When Jenny presented the "Jennypop" to my wife, it meant so much more to her than just a cool treat. Jenny understood how something so small can have an impact on an anxious patient.
My wife is currently a patient in LGH, 8 Lime. She has stage 4 colorectal cancer, post-proctocolectomy surgery, and I brought her to LGH with abdominal pain. Diagnosed with a bowel blockage, which involves an NG tube. Jenny was introduced to us by our nurse, who had been our nurse for a short period prior to Jenny, he informed us that Jenny was a young novice nurse from 6 Lime on a one day rotation.
From the first introduction, Jenny was so attentive, gracious, and thoroughly professional. Jenny took time to listen to both my wife and I, to understand our situation and needs. When informed I would be staying over, Jenny quickly organized a "care package” for me. A toiletries collection, towels, face clothes, socks, and scrubs to fit my 6'3 220lb frame without hesitation. Jenny constantly checked on our condition without being overly present, but also took time to just be with us, to make us feel as though we were her sole patient. When presented with a challenge, Jenny surpassed our expectations. Having an NG tube, my wife was restricted to ice chips only, which is less than ideal. Jenny took it upon herself to produce her own popsicles from small cups and tongue depressors. When Jenny presented the "Jennypop" to my wife, it meant so much more to her than just a cool treat. Jenny understood how something so small can have an impact on an anxious patient. There is something within a person like Jenny that can be so empathetic without being patronizing, and so caring without compromising quality or professionalism.
Though Jenny is a relatively new nurse, she treats patients as though she has many more years of experience. I feel that many young nurses could learn a lot from Jenny, as she is inspirational, resourceful, dedicated, and humble. However, I am sure Jenny would say that it is how one person should treat another. I hope Jenny continues to be an amazing nurse resource for LGH and the wonderful young lady that her parents, coworkers, and patients should be proud of. Thank you, Jenny.
