In an effort to assist the patient with coping with this horrible loss, Jessica and another nurse coordinated together to have the baby brought to the patient.
In the unit, we are used to coping with difficult and poor outcomes, but recently we had a patient with a different type of sad outcome than what we are accustomed to. We recently had a patient that suffered a fetal demise at 35 weeks gestation. The patient had to be admitted to another facility due to concerns about bleeding. Not only did this patient suffer a horrible loss, but she also did not get the opportunity to see her baby post-delivery. In an effort to assist the patient with coping with this horrible loss, Jessica and another nurse coordinated together to have the baby brought to the patient. The nurse brought the baby to the parents discretely but swaddled beautifully. The patient and her husband were able to spend time with their baby and bond over the experience. It was a very emotional, yet heartwarming experience. The patient had previously lost a pregnancy and was not able to adequately cope with that loss, but the extent that Jessica and the other nurse went through provided the patient with the closure she deserved after such a horrific situation. The patient expressed that she doesn't think she would be able to fully cope with the situation if she had not been able to see her baby, and these two nurses made that happen for her and her husband.
