This nurse recognized that the patient might not be safe to return home after surgical intervention, even though it is standard procedure for the patient to be discharged from PACU. She went out of her way to come speak to me and ask if I would be willing to see the patient for a PT evaluation. She then requested the surgeon put a consult in for therapy to determine if the patient would be safe for home. Ultimately, it was decided that the patient would not be safe to return home and required placement for therapy. The patient and family were very appreciative of all staff; this would not have been possible without the nurse going out of her way to request the consultation.
