She explained everything in a way that my daughter could understand and was honest about the fact that there would be a poke and it will hurt some.
I had to bring my 6-year-old daughter into the ER because she was very ill. One of the first things that needed to be done was to start an IV for labs and fluids. It was a very important step but was also very scary for her. My daughter was anxious and upset just thinking about having to go through an IV start. When Jodie came in she explained every single step of what she was doing before she did it and why each step was important. She explained everything in a way that my daughter could understand and was honest about the fact that there would be a poke and it will hurt some. Jodie then went on to explain that in order for it to go fast and help her get better fast she needed to stay really still so they could work together like partners. I was very surprised at how still my daughter stayed and how well she handled the IV start. Jodie got the IV on the first try, got the blood for lab quickly, and the fluids really helped my daughter feel better. Thank you Jodie for taking the extra time with my daughter to help her through the emotional side of being sick and getting help. I don't think she will be eager to get another IV, but I also don't think that she is as scared of the ER as she used to be. You helped her understand that working together can help the situation significantly!
