My friend was admitted for evaluation of abdominal pain and had surgery. She is 92 and became very aggressive and combative, trying to get out of bed, screaming, and ripping out her IV. Through all this behavior, Joel never once became annoyed, raised a voice, or addressed her as anything other than "Miss E."
Joel calmly reassured her, resettled her, and soothed her; all while answering the phone, and calling the MD on call for med recommendations. I was so happy to see care for my friend by someone who truly understands that nursing is much more than technical procedures. I hope that someday when I need medical care - a nurse like Joel will come to my aid! Patient care with respect and care cannot be found in a textbook - it is what makes nursing a "caring profession" and Joel has it!
