“Joel was not my mom’s nurse but when caring for the patient in the next bed, stopped and asked us if we needed anything. This gesture came after a long day in the EC and finally an admission to 6 South and was greatly appreciated by my family. In addition, when Joel was assigned to my mother’s care the next day, he kneeled at her bedside and talked to her about the recent death of her sister, determining when the funeral was to occur and coordinating a speedy discharge from the hospital the following morning. It meant the world to my mom, that Joel took the time to talk to her about her sister, the difficult time she was having and was willing to make sure her hospital discharge wouldn’t interfere with her sister’s funeral. These are two simple actions that made a lasting impression on us.”
