Although many nurses on this floor deserve this award, I appreciated John Hughes taking the time to sit down and talk to my mom during her hospitalization for a total knee replacement. He took the time to calm her nerves and we feel he went well beyond what was necessary to explain the techniques he'd researched to lessen pain during procedures (especially when she had to have an NG placed due to a bowel obstruction). His compassion and respect for the patient is outstanding - maybe the best I've ever encountered. Also, we appreciated his willingness to fully explain to us how pain medications work and to include us in the choices/decisions we had concerning such. His commitment to compassion, collaboration and respect helped to ensure that SIH delivers on quality - even during unanticipated complications. John is amazing!
