I can't put to words my gratitude for Joe and what he did for my family, but I personally will never forget his kindness and compassion.
Recently my father was hospitalized in ICU with COVID. During this time, the CRNA team was working in the ICU. Joe happened to be on several times while my dad was there. My dad called me one day (keep in mind he was breathless and working hard to breathe) to tell me that "Big Joe" was great and did a great job starting an IV that no one could get. Joe continued to be someone he mentioned frequently and really liked.
On the day that my dad was placed on the ventilator, Joe was working. Joe came to the bedside to explain things to us and give us a realistic picture of the seriousness of the situation. It was a hard conversation to have and a very emotional moment because we knew things were not looking good. As I tearfully told Joe, "Please take care of my dad," he was thoughtful enough to ask if my boys wanted a moment to talk to their grandpa before he was intubated. I then saw Joe put his arm around my mom and say, "I will take care of him like he is my own father". Those words meant the world to us. I truly believe that is the level of care that Joe provided that day.
Joe later called my mom to tell her how things went and made sure she was comfortable and had no questions. CRNA's often don't get recognition for their work because they don't always interact with patients when they are awake and alert. I think Joe deserves this recognition for the care he provided during my dad's battle with COVID. A day or two after my dad passed Joe took the time to call me and express his condolences and tell me how much he liked my dad, and how he had spent extra time at his bedside while he was in ICU. They watched sports and Joe just made sure he was ok. This kindness meant so much because my dad was struggling and anxious, and he spent so much time alone. I can't put to words my gratitude for Joe and what he did for my family, but I personally will never forget his kindness and compassion.
Note: This is Joseph's 2nd DAISY Award!
