In April, I made a drastic and horrible decision. I have no previous issues with mental health but I decided to try to end my life. Karen did not have to come up to the ICU to sit with me but she did. She had no idea what patient she was getting but when they asked for a sitter, she was willing. She didn't just sit there and ignore me, either. I was pretty tired the next day. As I started to come to, Karen was attentive. She showed empathy and real concern. I had a terrible ex-husband but I had an amazing current husband of 11 years. I did not start to realize the good things until this stranger in blue scrubs sat at my bedside and invested in my life. She made me feel safe. She comforted my four daughters and made a lasting impression on them. In a time that forever changed our lives, she will forever be "our person". She did all this for a stranger. I have my life back. I am not crazy. I had suffered from anxiety, and Karen Healey went above and beyond to help a complete stranger.
