Karen is knowledgeable, has integrity, a tremendous ability to share her knowledge with others, is generous and empathetic to her fellow workers, and is an amazing nurse. She treats her patients with such professionalism, combined with TLC and respect. I am privileged to work beside her, and our hospital is all the better to have Karen as a member of our team. Karen Humphries has been an immense pleasure to work with during my short time at SMMC. My interaction with Karen has not been at the bedside but rather has been in committees and small groups. Karen has been an integral part of our glycemic control committee, as a dedicated member and one of the key bedside nurses participating in creating a new insulin-related initiatives for the hospital. Karen often brings up key details in a process that an entire team overlooked that have serious impact the bedside nurse. She brings along with her amazing critical thinking skills a fresh, grounded perspective and is never afraid to speak up for what is right for not only patients but also our nurses. Karen is the whole package as a nurse and I am proud to work alongside her.

When I think of excellence in nursing, Karen is the first one who comes to mind. For over 30 years, Karen has provided the highest level of critical care to thousands of patients. She is one of the most meticulous, and insightful nurses I have ever worked with. She provides absolute comfort and reassurance to her patients and their families, even in the most challenging situations. She has skill and intuition beyond the highest expectation. She is the consummate professional, is an expert who mentors all in our unit, and is truly the nurse we all strive to emulate. She has been my mentor during my entire career here at SMMC and the mentor to hundreds of nurses that have come to our unit as students, new grads and new hires. She is an AMAZING nurse, an exemplar to all and so deserving of this award.
