Katie stepped up and said that she would need a timeline of all his orders for the day to ensure that everything happened when it was supposed to (happen).
Katie took care of our son during one of his rounds of sepsis on one of the sickest days of his life. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) doctors spent an hour and a half rounding on him, discussing all his critical problems, and trying to decide the best approach. Katie stepped up and said that she would need a timeline of all his orders for the day to ensure that everything happened when it was supposed to (happen). He had 15 lines running and was on dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine; his glucose was very high; his electrolytes were taking turns being too high or too low; and his fluid balance needed to be carefully managed. She pulled a trash can up to the computer and spent the day alternating between sitting on it while she dealt with orders and results and standing by his isolette while she administered medications, drew blood for labs, and provided other care. It was one of our worst days in the NICU, but we were confident that our baby was in the best possible hands. He made it through the day and is now almost a year old. When we learned about the DAISY Award, we both thought of Katie and the care she provided. She's on the Wound Team now and sees our son periodically since he's still in the NICU, and we know she had a key role in helping him survive.
