We had total confidence in what she did and how she was so nice to us. She never made us feel unimportant despite the many additional people coming into the ER after we arrived.
It was a very cold night in February when we decided that my husband, A, needed to go to the ER. He had a spiked temperature of 103.1 F and was a bit nauseated and had chills. I said let’s go as you are 80 years old and previously had sepsis a few years ago. It was a blessing that when we arrived at the ER, there was only 1 ambulance patient ahead of us. It was not too long before the triage nurse saw A and took him in. IVs were started, and blood work and EKG were hooked up. Katie Youmans was our main contact at that point. She was so kind and yet professional explaining everything as it went along. Katie said she recognized that I was very worried about A and she said we will take care of A and we will take care of you, too. Asked me if I wanted a cup of coffee. She brought A a warm blanket and stayed on top of the situation. I told her that our dog was dying, and she was compassionate. Sadly, our dog died on Saturday morning, and I was alone with her. But Katie could see the stresses building on us. We had total confidence in what she did and how she was so nice to us. She never made us feel unimportant despite the many additional people coming into the ER after we arrived. Katie checked on A for the rest of her shift. She said he would be there for a long time. Later, a doctor decided that he would be admitted. When Katie's shift was finished, she came back again. I thought that it was really special that, on her own time, she would come back in to say goodbye and give more words of encouragement. Katie's attitude was so caring, not just a job. We will not forget Katie.
