Kathy Miller has given unwavering dedication and professionalism.
Our "great-granddaughter" was transported to the Hospital NICU born to our "granddaughter", who is a drug-addicted mother. I have never been in a NICU nor did I have any knowledge of drug withdrawal in babies. On that day a journey began that has lasted six weeks plus. During this time the baby has received care that is nothing short of miraculous. Every single nurse that cared for the baby has gone far beyond their job description and nursing obligation. Our granddaughter's Dad and I have been treated with respect and dignity, giving us the feeling of being part of the NICU "family".
Kathy Miller has given unwavering dedication and professionalism. I feel she is an example of what it means to give of oneself to a helpless baby who is separated from the care and love of her biological mother. During my weekly visits to our "great-granddaughter", Kathy demonstrated techniques that brought comfort to the baby through her sense of touch and gentle ways of soothing her during difficult days. I was given knowledge with regard to the medical aspect of the baby's treatment, along with an understanding of the baby's monitor. Kathy assured me not to be concerned when the lights and sounds of the monitor went off, as she would be right outside the door. She was always right outside the door.
On one occasion, I felt absolutely overwhelmed and exhausted with so much going on in my personal life. Kathy served as a sounding board and listened attentively. Before she departed from the room, without a single word, she lightly touched my shoulder. Soon after her departure, the NICIU social worker was standing by my side. She is an incredibly kind and supportive person that offered me advice on ways to take care of myself followed by a recommendation. I am sure it was Kathy who asked the social worker to stop by for a talk. My day got better because of them.
In my opinion, Kathy is an outstanding role model in the nursing field. Whenever I leave the baby in her care, I feel she is like her guardian angel. Her presence has brought me a sense of peace and gratitude, knowing that the baby will be given extraordinary care in the absence of her immediate family and biological mother.
