Kati was and remains an inspiration to K during her recent hospitalization. Kati participated in the unique and special connection between a patient and nurse. She connected with the 9-year-old girl who was hurting uncontrollably, scared beyond belief and whose parents (who are both nurses) didn't have the words to explain to K why God would allow her to feel so terrible.
Kati allowed K to be involved in decisions, simple as they were, so she felt control and power over the pain that caused her so much discomfort. Together they colored pictures, said a bedtime prayer, told jokes and even had a syringe water fight or two. She even went to Seacrest TV and performed a special talent for all the children to see, and for K to watch from her hospital bed. Her overwhelming positivity and gentle nature won K's immediate admiration, and trust as only a nurse can do. She turned a very difficult hospitalization into a positive memory because of the relationship she established with K. Today we do not talk about the pain, but of the wonderful nurse, Kati, who is now forever in our hearts.
We as a family agree, Kati, went above and beyond in her care. But, if you ask Kati, she will likely just say, "I treated K, like every patient I care for at CHCO." Which is what makes Kati so special. She makes ordinary, the extraordinary for her patients.
