Katie McLoone advocated for her patient's best interest from the moment she admitted him to the day he left St. Francis 3 weeks later. In spite of the patient's critical illness persisting much longer than anticipated, Katie refused to give up on providing him the most aggressive and comprehensive care. Due to her excellent, competent, and compassionate care, this patient had a much more positive outcome than what was anticipated. Katie's approach to care encompassed the patient and his family. She was critical in providing the emotional support and compassion that the patient's family (father, mother, wife, and 5 yr old child) needed during this very stressful time. Katie's thorough and open communication with the family built a trusting relationship that helped the family feel involved and well informed. The patient and his family returned to the hospital several weeks after he was discharged to thank Katie again and give an update on how successful he has been in his recovery.
We are blessed in the Special Care Unit to have this extraordinary nurse, Katie McLoone.
