I don't know where to begin. Through a series of events at a football game the night before, my son became a patient at Palmetto Health Richland's Children's Hospital. It was a Saturday, early afternoon. I came home from work and noticed my son lying on the couch, rather lethargic. After a brief question and answer period, I called my husband, who is an ER physician at another hospital. Because our son is a Type 1 diabetic, my husband asked that I bring him to his ER for some lab work and panels. Shortly after we arrived, we learned that my son was dehydrated and in the early stages of DKA. We needed to be transported to the PICU at the Children's Hospital for IV insulin and fluids.
When we arrived we were immediately transferred to the PICU. We were introduced to the doctors and nurses. Blood was drawn and fluids were started at an immediate, and yet not alarming, rate. From the beginning, Kelli went above and beyond the lengths that were necessary to help us feel comfortable. She took excellent physical care of my son and also engaged him in witty banter and humor when appropriate. When he started to feel better, Kelli made certain that he could have his Sprite Zero just the way he likes it, with no ice.
After we had reviewed his primary medical history and he had become stabilized, I left his side and went into the hall to let Kelli know that he also has Asperger's Syndrome, a high-functioning form of Autism. She was very familiar with Asperger's and told me that she understood and that I had done a great job with him. Although many people have told me how "great" my son is, she truly understood him. And she understood me, too! To have a professional nurse and Mom recognize the situation and not only take appropriate care of my son, but also take care of a Mom who desperately needed a kind word, meant everything to me. I will always remember Kelli for her care, her professionalism, and her empathy.
