After a bit, Kelli called him back and suggested a different medication. The doctor researched and gave it the green light. N’s pain significantly decreased once the new med kicked in. Kelli is our hero.
My son N - a 20 year old non-verbal autistic man - was in ICU for two weeks after nearly dying from an infected appendix. He began one night to tense up and cry out in pain, shooting his heart rate up around 150. Separately, his bedding started filling up with urine. All of the nurses were amazing, but Kelli Scott went above and beyond for my son. Kelli thought he perhaps needed a larger size Foley catheter and set about changing it out… once she was finished, N seized up and cried out “help me!” This from a non-verbal person with high pain tolerance is significant! Kelli saw it happening and also saw the urine bypassing the catheter, and she put the pieces together. She called the physician on duty, who sort of blew her off. Then she called him again and said she really thought N was having bladder spasms. This time, the doctor said, “that actually makes sense,” and not only that, Kelli suggested a medication to help N. The doctor called her back, and that the drug wouldn’t work because it would interfere with his healing after major abdominal surgery. After a bit, Kelli called him back and suggested a different medication. The doctor researched and gave it the green light. N’s pain significantly decreased once the new med kicked in. Kelli is our hero. Sadly, we were sent to another unit with no notice on Kelli’s night off, so we did not get to say goodbye and thank her as profusely as we’d have liked. So if she’s reading this, thank you, thank you, thank you, Kelli! We love you!
