Kelly has a wonderful knack for handling embarrassing situations and making the patient as comfortable as possible.
Being in ICU represents some sort of serious health issue which was my case. Kelly not only had to care for me but answer an onslaught of questions and concerns from my wife (who was onsite) and my children. She answered what she could in a calm and professional manner but the questions kept on coming. Kelly suggested my wife FaceTime my kids as she felt it would answer the majority of their questions - well according to my wife it did! They saw me connected to all sorts of equipment letting me be alive and functioning.
When I awoke from my surgery, Kelly introduced herself and began explaining where I was and what has occurred. Kelly has a unique ability to make direct eye contact when she would talk which has a calming feeling because she was focusing on the patient and not going about other things. I had a catheter, rectal catheter, and IVs everywhere including one BIG one in my neck. I'm a middle-aged man and when it came to having my catheters removed Kelly was first of all compassionate as she knew being exposed can be uncomfortable, but she went about her business telling me what was going on and what I might feel. She made me comfortable in an extremely uncomfortable situation. She always displayed confidence in what she was doing and always had a calming conversation while doing so.
When I needed to use the restroom I needed assistance getting out of bed - without hesitation, she reached out her hand and helped me out - I'm a big guy! Using the restroom I became weak and could not clean myself - I sheepishly had to ask Kelly to help clean me up. I apologized and Kelly said, "No need, it is part of my job." She has a wonderful knack for handling embarrassing situations and making the patient as comfortable as possible. Kelly built a trusting, caring, and comforting relationship with me in no time. She knew when to be serious and when to throw in a bit of sarcasm. She made me feel alive during a difficult time. When I told my wife I wanted to recognize Kelly she could not agree more.
I had 5 surgeries and received excellent care from both surgeons and nurses but Kelly (7ICU) went above and beyond to build a trusting and caring relationship in no time! This is an incredible gift Kelly has and allows her to focus on the patient's care and build a relationship.
