Kelly took exceptional care of our very sick patient on the cardiology service who was in with a malignant pericardial effusion and pulmonary embolism. He had been losing weight and running out of treatment options for his cancer. He had a few long days in the hospital, being NPO for procedures and not eating well. He was visiting with a friend one night with Kelly as his nurse, and she went out of her way to order him a steak dinner and have it delivered for him and his friend. Her special care was so impactful. The next day, he took a negative turn and ended up dying that day. But it was so meaningful to the family to hear about his wonderful care in the hospital, including that special steak dinner. Despite their hearts breaking, it put a smile on the faces of our patient's wife and friend to know how well he was cared for the night before he died.
