Kelly Reber is currently the charge nurse in the ED. Today we received notice of FIVE 911 penetrating trauma victims en route. The ED was already loaded to capacity with every bed full, 14 hallway patients,12 patients admitted on hold, and 15+ in the waiting room with a 6-7 hr wait time. It was beyond busy. Kelly quickly rearranged what she could to make room for the incoming traumas. She carefully listened to report and assigned rooms for the trauma patients based on the description and severity of injuries. Kelly cleverly positioned herself at the Command Desk so she could see each patient and she kept careful notes of each patient as they were assessed by the trauma team, and updated with changes as they happened. She knew every injury and the location of every patient at all times. She could answer every question and had a handle on every situation.
In the meantime, several EMS vehicles arrived and Kelly was assessing them, assigning places - making places where there weren't places. She was handling acute emergencies in the hallway, administering medication, locating stretchers, setting up monitors, answering phones and staff - ALL AT ONCE.
While I worked I observed Kelly. I saw her doing all these things with a smile. She never raised her voice. She said "please" and "thank you" and "I appreciate that." She made her way around to make people go to lunch, take a break, or take a walk to relieve stress. When most people may have lost it or run away, she kept her cool.
Kelly still has 2 hours left in her shift and she is seriously rocking it. She is holding this ED together while there is an earthquake/tornado ferociously rumbling and swirling around. I am so proud of her leadership skills. She deserves recognition for successfully commanding this shift.
