Kelly arranged to transport our patient to see his wife and stayed well past the end of her shift to make sure he was able to spend every last minute he could with her.
We have had several instances where we’ve had spouses on our sister COVID units, where one spouse has been doing well and the other has declined and required life support or palliative care. Kelly has been a great support to our nurses to help brainstorm and collaborate with other units to figure out how our patients can maximize their last moments with their loved ones.

In January, we had a patient we’ve had for over two weeks find out that his wife was to be placed on comfort measures after compassionate extubation. Kelly arranged to transport our patient to see his wife and stayed well past the end of her shift to make sure he was able to spend every last minute he could with her. To say that she made a difference in his last moments with her is an understatement and exemplifies the meaningful, exemplary care we are proud to deliver on C5 and at LRH. Creating these moments for our patients who can’t have family here with them and who can’t be with their family members who are actually in the hospital has been incredibly tough on our staff, but I am grateful for caring, resilient nurses like Kelly who have always kept a patient-centered mindset and support our nurses to create moments for patients they won’t forget.
