Kenny knew I had been struggling clinically and brought in pastries from a bakery close to where he lived. He said he wanted to make sure I felt at home and was taken care of during these tough times.
I met Kenny when I was recently admitted to 5 lach for a new medical diagnosis. The first night of my second admission is when we met him, both my mom and I were scared and frustrated by the new neurologic deficits that I was facing from the autoimmune encephalitis. Kenny had a bubbly personality but was a consummate professional as a nurse. You could tell he eats and bleeds nursing. Through talking with him while on shift, we learned we had similar colleagues, and those colleagues were mentors to him driving him to go from being a PCA to RN (and hopefully a nurse practitioner one day). The second night I was here, Kenny knew I had been struggling clinically and brought in pastries from a bakery close to where he lived. He said he wanted to make sure I felt at home and was taken care of during these tough times. My hospitalization continued to become more complex, and Kenny found out through our mutual colleagues that I was dealing with bad insomnia. Kenny again took it upon himself to bring in some essential oils to bring a more relaxing vibe to my room and hopefully help me sleep. He made sure to make every interaction fun and lighthearted, but he also made sure to promote the ultimate care plan, especially as it related to my sleep. Kenny's personality, coupled with his compassion/empathy, is the mold we need in all our nurses and team members. I know the interactions I have had with him are also those of other patients and their families' experience with him.
