As a team leader within the endocrinology clinic, a great deal of pride overwhelms me as I prepared this entry for the DAISY Award nomination. I believe Kim Jernigan, RN, BSN, CDE is the perfect fit for this award as she is a clinical expert in the area of pediatric diabetes providing extraordinary services and compassionate care to all of the patients she encounters as a diabetes educator. She is the nursing image Children's is striving for each day. Kim began her journey at Children's in 1999 and has developed into a natural leader that physicians, families, patients, and staff members look up to and respect. Dr. A describes her as being "incredibly hard working, efficient, and able to connect with families" leading and encouraging them to becoming more "independent and confident with their diabetes self-management". Dr. A supports her commitment to this profession as she "always put a child's needs first" despite how busy we become. She is the first to arrive and work and often the last to leave. Her great personality is infectious as she brightens any room she enters.
"She is one of the hardest working people that I have ever met. She is someone that to me defines the "second mile" principle through her actions, words and deeds. She comes to work and does what is required of her and then some. She goes the extra mile with her patients, her co-workers, the physicians and everyone else in the Endocrine clinic. I have known Kim since I started as a brand new nurse 8 years ago. She was one of the first team leaders on the endocrine unit and was very effective in her role. She continues to function in such a manner here in our clinic as well. She is the "go to" person for everyone regardless of job or title. She is always willing to take time to answer questions, talk to families one on one, and is a great diabetes educator. Her families speak very highly of her. She is someone who gets all her work done on time and then works even harder. She is a joy to work with and I think she is very deserving of this recognition."
Clinically she strives to stay up-to-date with the changes in diabetes care by attending conferences, self-seeking opportunities to learn more about her field, and sharing this knowledge with the members on our team. Kim easily adjusts to new skill sets and often spends a great deal of time sharing those learned skills with others. She embraces evidence based nursing and advocates for our educational material to be updated when needed. On several occasions, Kim committed to arriving to work outside of her normal work schedule to provide in services to the inpatient staff. She is highly skilled as a diabetes educator and shares her knowledge effortlessly. Kim not only shines within the walls of Children's Medical Center. Her passion is also evident outside of work. She is the first to sign up for walks that support pediatric diabetes research. Each year she volunteers as a nurse at our diabetes camps reaching the hearts of many young patients with diabetes. I am extremely proud to work with her. Each day I have with her I learn more that empowers me as I follow in her footsteps. She is an amazing women and talented nurse.
