Kim supported her staff 100% and picked up extra shifts to work alongside her employees while staffing numbers were low.
Kim is the manager of 3N, a unit that began as a neurology unit before the pandemic. During the pandemic 3N quickly became 100% COVID patients and as these COVID patients began to recede, we saw a reduction of regular medical patients in the hospital she was forced with the difficult decision of furloughing staff. Being the compassionate person Kim is, she took this task to heart and had meaningful and compassionate conversations with her staff while delivering this difficult news. As the regular patient volumes began to increase again, Kim was tasked with bringing back her furloughed staff. While bringing her staff back her unit began to change and become a progressive level care. She worked tirelessly through coordinating ACLS/progressive care orientation, all the while staffing a unit to care for the medical patients filling her unit.

Kim supported her staff 100% and picked up extra shifts to work alongside her employees while staffing numbers were low. At every step of this difficult journey Kim has stayed positive and focused on staying strong for her team. 2020 was the most difficult year in my career and Kim regularly provided support and positivity that helped me when I was feeling defeated. Kim is a truly unique individual that has carried herself with grace while dealing with some of the most difficult things a manager would have to face. With all these challenges Kim always focused on providing the best patient care and outcomes. Kim deserves this recognition for her extraordinary leadership.

A leader’s story. This leader works like a phoenix. She rebuilds and renews from the ashes of change. Examples: created a nursing unit, 3NE, after Select Specialties moved from GP, converted her unit to care for COVID patients during the initial surg, then closed her units, her staff redeployed. During the post COVID lull she worked on MN to educate staff on the care and documentation for stroke patients. During the surg-1, post COVID recovery period this manager returns to the dayshift to develop a new unit and mentor new and returning staff.

With this manager’s support and guidance, they became an observation/progressive care/stroke unit. Wow!
This manager is an advocate for the profession of nursing and is dedicated to nursing excellence and lifelong learning. During the most challenging times, this manager obtained her MSN, NE-BC and maintains her BLS instructor status. She is recognized by her peers as a content expert and readily shares her knowledge. This manager is recognized as a gentle, compassionate communicator and brings calm to chaos. She looks for creative solutions around obstacles and makes ongoing suggestions to improve patient care. She exemplified leadership and served as a mentor and resource. Kim believes in nursing as a profession and takes pride in being a leader involved in the success of her department as well as the success of the organization.

As a Clinical Nurse Manager of 3 North, Kim, along with her staff, have endured many changes in the last year. Kim and her staff were saddened to hear that 3 North would be closed and her staff furloughed during the lull of the pandemic. During this transition, Kim kept a cool head, positive attitude and a warm caring heart – that was evident to her staff. She was soon able to bring back her staff to a now progressive care/observation unit, which entailed working with the educators and the managers and staff of CCSU to train and certify her staff in ACLS.

Also, as the leader of a STROKE Certified unit, Kim did an amazing job of educating her staff – both days and MN staff even working the off shift for a while. Kim has worked tirelessly at creating a positive, safe environment for her staff, especially when morale was low. She has managed to rebuild her staff after a tough COVID year and will be starting the summer season on a great note. I also want to recognize that all the while COVID was taking us all down, Kim kept focus on her professional goals and completed her MSN in December. I am so very proud of the leader she is and the coworker that I can rely on to talk through issues with. She brings me back to “my center” with her logic and positivity. She is a leader for the nursing profession as well as a successful leader for Beaumont Health.
