When the patient stepped into L&D at 32 weeks pregnant she had no clue the long stay she was in for. Due to growth restrictions, her care team recommended she stay in the hospital until delivery to be continuously monitored, after receiving the news in stride, she did not hesitate to choose what was best for her baby but realized this meant many days spent in a hospital bed and away from her 6-year-old daughter. She would miss her planned baby shower and spend her 29th birthday in the hospital. The L& D nurses quickly bonded with the patient each having their own special connection with her, she quickly was adopted into the KPWH L&D family! As time passed, our team knew we had to do something special for her—to lift her spirits and make up for her missed baby shower. We all know how rough a long antepartum stay can be for a mother! The plan quickly came together to throw her a surprise baby shower and birthday party on her birthday. While one of the night shift nurses took her for a walk shortly after midnight the rest of the team quickly decorated her room and brought in gifts, hid behind the curtains. When she was wheeled back into the room, they shouted “SURPRISE!" and wow was she surprised! It was extremely emotional, and everyone felt the love in the room. Her celebration continued into the day as the dayshift staff came in and showered her once again with gifts for her, her baby boy, and her daughter because we can’t forget big sis! The patient was so thankful and felt it gave her the strength to keep on going. She delivered a beautiful healthy baby boy 5 weeks later.

Since being discharged, she has come in with her baby to visit the staff because she will always feel like a part of the family here. I want to recognize the L&D team for showing such compassionate care and going above and beyond to make a profound difference and impact in our patients’ lives. This is just one example of the incredible care given by our L&D nurses on a daily basis.
