Kristi is a team member who advocates for the needs of her patients and their families.
Kristi demonstrates kindness and support for her patients each day. During interactions, she utilizes active listening through body language (eye contact) and verbal acknowledgment. She processes the information to advocate for the best care of her patient. Today, she provided care for a patient who had a history of autism and anxiety. The family was contacted the day prior to admission to clarify concerns. Upon admission, the parent expressed concern about her child completing the procedures. After settling this patient in her room, Kristi sought information to provide the best care for this patient. She listened to the family’s concerns. Patiently and gently, she was able to complete the patient’s admission. Because of the patient’s history and the family’s expressed anxiety, Kristi advocated to provide consistent care throughout the patient’s admission. The family who arrived expressing doubts about being able to complete the procedures left pleased with the care that was provided.

The above scenario is not unique for Kristi. She has provided care for other patients who present a challenge. A young man presented to the ARU needing a procedure with anesthesia. Because the patient had milk earlier in the day, the case needed to move to later in the day. The family had other commitments so they were distraught about the delay. Family wanted to reschedule. Once again, Kristi sought advice from her peers and the medical personnel involved in the case. Patiently, she informed the patient’s family of the medical concerns involved in rescheduling the procedure. Alternatives were presented to the family. In the end, the patient’s scheduled procedure was completed.

The third case that comes to mind is one in which Kristi expressed concern for the home safety of a patient. She contacted the necessary personnel to investigate the concern. The family member demonstrated anger by shouting at Kristi. Through the entire episode, Kristi listened to the family. In the end, she prioritized the safety of the patient. The patient returned to the ARU for another procedure. Once again, Kristi was his nurse. She once again provided the needed care. Kristi is a team member who advocates for the needs of her patients and their families. She is ready and willing to assist other members of the PARU team to provide the best care for all.
