Laura Houck was recognized by a patient's family on 4 Lime for going above and beyond in their loved one's care. Laura cared for a 54 year-old female that went into acute renal failure postoperatively, following Total Joint Replacement Surgery. The family described the following:
"Laura was really amazing! She went the extra mile for my mom and kept us informed. We were worried and mom was out of it, but the care provided by Laura demonstrated confidence and true caring. She made us feel less worried. She frequently checked on us, not just mom to make sure we were OK and to explain the various testing that was going to be done and what was being done to help my mom. We really knew mom was in good hands."
In this situation, Laura worked with the medical team and coordinated in-depth testing to evaluate this patient before she was transferred to a higher level of care. Through her positive assertiveness with the medical team, the patient received lab testing, ultrasounds and fluid boluses that improved her outcome. Truly, Laura prevented a rapid response in this patient and prevented her from further deteriorating. In fact, the patient was returned to 4 Lime a few days later and the family continued to voice their praise for Laura's care and how she saved their mom. What is even more amazing is that she incorporates care like this in her approach to all of her patients. As in the words of the patient's family, she truly is "Amazing".
