I delivered my baby at LPCH this year. I am an L&D nurse as well so my birth plan was to not plan any part of my delivery in order to avoid the "nurse curse". Of course, I wanted to avoid having a C-section, an induction, or an epidural (but again no plan...). I was eventually induced and I was nervous about having to play the role of a patient. Lily agreed to be my nurse and I immediately felt a sense of relief. She was incredibly supportive throughout my entire labor, all while precepting a new grad. My induction took a couple of days and Lily agreed to be with me on her next shift as well. When my induction finally concluded with the label "failure to descend" and became a Cesarean delivery, Lily held me close and reminded me of how important the day is regardless of the route. She reminded me of my strengths and worked closely with my physician to find the best-individualized approach to support me. I later learned that both she and my physician had been discussing their concern for C-section but they knew how important laboring was to me and agreed to support me through it as long as everything was safe. Lily not only made me feel safe and comfortable, but she also made my husband feel the same way. She checked in with us privately, offered massage, and endlessly showed love and compassion. We both love Lily so much. Because we had such an amazing nurse and doula (another labor nurse not scheduled that day), our daughter was brought into the most magical space. We listened to music in the operating room along with Lily's calming and optimistic voice throughout the day. She is one of the most grounded people I have ever known, she is dedicated to individualized patient care and she is a brilliant nurse. I feel privileged to work with her and blessed to have had her be my nurse on the most important day of our lives.
