On April 28th, 2021, I was scheduled to undergo surgery at 2:30 at Banner Thunderbird Hospital. It was actually about an hour late and I believe it lasted about 30 minutes, and I expected to be discharged within an hour or two later. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I remained in the perioperative area until almost 11:30 pm. I was a bit "woozy" and had no watch but would guess I spent at least 7 hours in the area before I was discharged. There was one nurse with me briefly, then Luisa Valdez took over as my nurse and she monitored me for numerous hours. Luisa should be commended for the absolutely wonderful and professional care she gave me. I was very frustrated and embarrassed at my complication. As the hours passed, I became the last patient in my section so I was moved to the very last area open for the night. There was only one other patient left in the entire department. Luisa was so patient - she never rushed me or made me feel like she was in a hurry to be rid of me. Even as it became 11 p.m. and I knew a catheter was probably in my future, she remained calm and so nice, which in turn, kept me calm. I am happy to say that I was able to be discharged sometime after 11 pm without a catheter. I have had numerous surgeries before and I know the situation could have ended badly for me but due to Luisa's patience, caring and encouragement, I was able to relax. Thank you, Luisa!
