She is extremely kind and caring. She listens and really hears what I have to say. She is concerned about my comfort, and how my treatments are going.
I have been a patient at the University of Michigan Cancer Center for the past three years. I was diagnosed with bladder cancer which required me to come in for weekly BCG/Interferon infusions and subsequent follow-up maintenance treatments. These infusions are often painful and difficult to endure.
After being cancer free for three years, the cancer recently came back and I find myself going through these treatments all over again. Madonna Perkins, RN has been my primary chemo nurse for these treatments. I have always felt it important to acknowledge extraordinary kindness when I encounter it. All those little things that a person does to help you feel comfortable mean so much.
I don’t know where to begin with Madonna. She is extremely kind and caring. She listens and really hears what I have to say. She is concerned about my comfort, and how my treatments are going. With these infusions, they get worse the more you have. Madonna is sensitive to this and really understands what I, and I am sure what other bladder cancer patients go through. She has been doing this for a long time and she just has that special touch. She is always calm, never rushes, and takes her time with you. She is a nurse with a presence. She really is extraordinary.
Just recently as treatments progressed, I was having difficulty with them, and Madonna made some suggestions from her years of experience of listening to other patients, along with her nursing expertise. She really helped me with ideas and suggestions on how to curtail the pain and discomfort. It helped me so much and I am so very thankful. I often wonder if the Urologists sending the bladder cancer patients over for infusions really know just how much of a difference an excellent chemo nurse like Madonna, can make in our lives. I did tell my physician about Madonna because I thought he really needed to know how much it means to me. These nurses are such a big part of the healing team, and are our lifeline! It really helps us endure these treatments when we have a compassionate and understanding nurse like Madonna. I just don’t feel so alone on this journey. Madonna Perkins is a true DAISY Nurse.
