An OR nurse on the team recognized the potential effect a Jehovah's Witness patient may have on a surgical patient’s safety and outcomes. This nurse developed a specific questionnaire that is used to assess the needs and wishes of the Jehovah’s Witness patient. This questionnaire is utilized with collaboration and teamwork from the Surgical Preop and Recovery (SPAR) unit to communicate this specific population’s wishes with regards to acceptance of blood products and other blood product-related infusions during surgery.

In an effort to both reduce waste and benefit vulnerable populations, a team of OR staff utilized instrument wrapping materials and crafted them into roll-up sleeping sacks. These sacks were donated to a local church that distributed them to the local homeless population.

In an effort to raise money for the community, the OR team organized and raised money amongst the staff for back-to-school shoe shopping by having a bake sale last fall. The money was donated to Five Loaves Food Pantry in Newport News, Virginia. Continuing with their baking skills and honoring another time for treats, the OR team also partnered with EVMS urology surgeon, Dr. McCammon, and raised money selling cookie bundles around the Valentine’s Day holiday. This money was donated to a Portsmouth High School disadvantaged group.

Lastly, this past November/December the OR staff sponsored an Angel Tree team by supporting 20 children designated by the local Salvation Army. Each child that was sponsored received a clothing gift specific to their request/size. These holiday gift bundles were then distributed to the local families by the Salvation Army.

The OR team demonstrates their efforts to improve health every day through nursing excellence by their nurse satisfaction scores. In an effort to improve nursing retention, the OR has successfully adopted an Ambassadors program that pairs novice nurses with an experienced nurse mentor on the unit. The OR team demonstrates its commitment to ongoing education. The OR currently has 59 of its nurses with their BSN, 4 with MSNs, and 10 who are currently enrolled in MSN or BSN programs. One OR nurse applied and successfully was awarded a Sentara MSN scholarship within the past year. The OR nursing team is dedicated to professional practice as evidenced by the number of nurses holding professional certification. 66% of the OR nursing staff hold professional certification and were honored with the CNOR Strong award this past winter. The OR team has an RN-facilitated Process Improvement Committee that meets to discuss near misses, quality improvement projects, and community outreach ideas. The committee was established in Spring 2018 and continues to meet monthly.

Thank you for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
