She made a game of counting ounces of liquid so my son would drink liquids because he told her he didn't like being hooked up to the IV fluids. She helped him get off of the IV, and we alleviated the bathroom mistakes, which made him so happy.
My child was admitted with a Cancer diagnosis and started chemotherapy. Nurse Makayla went above and beyond helping. While the treatment made him nauseated, Nurse Makayla checked on him and asked how he felt, encouraged my child, and told him how strong he was.
She made sure to offer him a variety of juices and snacks, and when an added drink supplement was given to him to help as he couldn't eat and had a problem tolerating liquid, Nurse Makayla caught that even though it was an apple clear flavor, it had milk and he had a posted milk allergy. She got coloring pages so he and his siblings could have a coloring contest. She helped cover his open wounds so he could shower. She made him not feel embarrassed or shameful when he couldn't get to the bathroom and had accidents because he was hooked up to liquid meds. She helped me get my questions together to ask the Oncology team so I could understand what was going on with my son’s treatment because I didn't know anything about his ailment being admitted.
On our last day, she helped us pack as we accumulated a lot in 12 days. She got a cart to carry our things to our ride outside, and she walked with us, as we were about to get in the car, she gave my son a YOU’RE A HERO sticker, and he's been talking about it since we left. I thank Makayla for her kind, caring spirit and nature, which helped my baby and me find peace and better understanding during a traumatic time. Thank you, Nurse Makayla.
