Margie is a patient advocate who goes above and beyond for those she serves. She is kind, and thoughtful and is motivated to serve our patients and staff members alike.
It is my pleasure to nominate and recognize Sr. Nurse Manager, Margie Leathers for her clinical expertise, Epic involvement, and the outstanding service she provides for our patients, physicians, and staff. In addition, Margie is a patient advocate who goes above and beyond for those she serves. She is kind, and thoughtful and is motivated to serve our patients and staff members alike. She appreciates and continues to find the humor and joy in simple patient care, but also operates with precision when a patient’s condition demands expert attention. She’s brilliant, steadfast, and compassionate. A better title for her role might include Orchestrator, Conductor, Traffic Controller, and Advocate, as these titles reflect the qualities, abilities, and personal/professional attitudes that describe what Margie does and who Margie is in our organization. Margie arranges everything from exam room utilization with our ever-changing complexities of shared space, to daily huddles and staff recognition opportunities. Under her direction, operations like the rapid implementation of telehealth systems at the onset of Covid to support diverse patient and provider needs, protocols and procedures to routine safety drills and supply management have been/are successfully planned and conducted to the benefit of our organization and the people we serve. Margie is especially skilled at maneuvering resources to support patient needs. Everything from persuading providers to see the patient who showed up late or on the wrong day to personally stepping in to fill a nursing role when resources are stretched thin are tactics in Margie’s skillset that she applies to the daily work of the clinic. Most importantly and at the center of who Margie is and how she leads, are people – how we treat them, how we make them feel, how we support them, and how we promote their health and wellbeing. This is the essence of and driver for Margie the nurse, Margie the person, and her role here. Whether patient or colleague, whether in the hallways and exam rooms of the clinic or beyond the walls of Emory Healthcare, Margie leads by example with kindness, humility, and appreciation of others. Margie as a leader elevates hope, demonstrates advance healing, and improved health not only for our patients but for our service-line as a whole. I’ve never known one person to shoulder so much for those who cannot do for themselves. Patient and peer advocacy is her mission. All the while, leading the team like only she can, with a special sense of kindness and unwavering dedication. Margie is truly deserving of this prestigious award.
