Marian tried to uplift the patient emotionally by listening and spending time with her.
When Marian was assigned to take care of one of the COVID positive patients in ICU (in her 60's, Arabic speaker with COVID symptoms), she tried to establish rapport with the patient. She was assigned to the same patient for days. During this time, she assisted with the patient's needs. The patient also battled depression, was not eating properly, refused to answer phone calls from family members, and sometimes her replies confused the staff. And it was then that Marian tried to uplift the patient emotionally by listening and spending time with her.
Days passed, the patient showed signs of improvement and was responding well to treatment, then she was looking for Marian. She visited her after duty hours. It's amazing how a patient would recognize a specific person who takes care of her when all nurses look the same with their full PPE. The patient remembered her and said her name correctly.
After one month of admission, the patient's second negative result came. Fate had it that Marian was on duty that day, and relayed the good news to the patient. The patient was so ecstatic that the patient kissed Marian's hand many times (an Arabic gesture of being very thankful to someone). With great joy and swelling heart, Marian escorted her out of the room and bid her goodbye.
Moments like this truly highlight what an Extraordinary Nurse Marian Manalo is.
