My mother was admitted to the ICU and placed under comfort care. Carmel was our nurse during the 7 AM to 7 PM shift the next day. Her level of compassion and professionalism was exceptional, providing peace and comfort despite my mother being unresponsive for about thirty hours. A defining moment of her exemplary service occurred after my mother unexpectedly opened her eyes at 6:25 PM. Recognizing this significant action, Carmel gently guided me, suggesting that my mother was opening her eyes as her way of saying goodbye. This insight was invaluable. It allowed me to quickly connect with my sister and brother via FaceTime, ensuring that all her children were present, celebrating her life, and allowing her to pass peacefully while looking into the eyes of her loved ones.

Carmel’s presence and actions, particularly in navigating this delicate situation with grace and empathy, were nothing short of heroic. My mother passed away at 6:31 PM, surrounded by the love of her entire family, both near and far, thanks to Carmel’s thoughtful intervention. Carmel’s unwavering support did not just comfort my mother in her final moments but also empowered us as a family to face this painful transition. She is truly an asset to Oak Hill Hospital and embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award through her caring, knowledge, and loving nature. In a world that often forgets the importance of compassionate healthcare, we find a beacon of hope in Carmel.
