Every nurse who took care of my husband was extraordinary. Mariyamma, however, stood out for me because she lit up the room with happiness and hope. She always had a very big genuine smile that made me smile. When I was afraid to enter the room as I saw my husband suffering in pain, she was cheerful and encouraged me. I came into the room and after a little while I was smiling too. She made light conversation which is what I needed. Seeing her perform her duties, some of which were painful for my husband, with a calm and reassuring manner, I soon learned from her how to do the same. Instead of looking away and standing back I learned to hold his hand and stay. I marveled at her patience. She would ask a question and wait for my husband to answer without rushing him. She made us feel like we were her only patient and family she was responsible for. I know she had to have had many others as well. She listened to my husband carefully. I could see the concentration in her face. Every complaint he had she found a way to make better or called someone to check what else could be done. Her kindness and compassion has made me a kinder and more compassionate person. Thank you - you are our angel and hero.
