This nurse is the epitome of empathy and compassion in addition to having a playful sense of humor that brightens patients' days. You can hear the laughter and see the smiles as you walk down the hallway when this nurse is in a room with her patients or even interacts with other caregivers. She is often seen pulling up a chair at the patient's bedside to be able to make eye contact with them and enhance the human interaction she has with each of her patients. She not only understands the complexities of the patient's diagnosis but understands the patient's personal motivations and drives as she gets to know each of her patients as a person, not just a sick patient. This nurse goes out of her way to ensure others (patients and caregivers included) have everything that they need and takes initiative without being prompted to help others when needed. Most recently, as we began to allow visitors in the building with guidelines, access to amenities is sometimes difficult. This nurse provided the cash to a patient's family member to be able to share a meal with the patient because neither the patient nor the family member had the resources to purchase the meal. It does not stop there, she has also helped to ensure that patients are discharged with their medications by donating the couple extra dollars that she has in her pocket to help them pay for their prescriptions so that they have what they need to be successful at discharge. Not many even know that she does this, but it adds to her compassion and her extraordinary approach to patient care.
