I write this letter out of great respect and admiration for Mauricio Simas, RN. Mauricio has consistently demonstrated both care and compassion with every patient and family he encounters. He is the consummate advocate for equity and justice for all of our patients. In particular, Mauricio advocated for a 15-year-old patient that was going through a very difficult time in her young life. Being moved from one foster home to another, this patient frequently found herself frustrated and could not cope with the trauma in her life effectively. As such, she found herself in our department on several occasions. On the date in question, the patient was transferred from another facility. The patient was not a danger to self or others and was engaging staff appropriately. Mauricio was steadfast and adamant that patient rights must be respected. He asserted that he understood that the patient needed to be in a safe environment while placement was arranged. Mauricio embodies UCSF PRIDE values. His commitment and dedication as a patient advocate is unrivaled. It is for these reasons and many not listed here that Mauricio Simas is a true DAISY Nurse.
