Unfortunately, my husband, P, passed away in the Medical ICU from Covid pneumonia. He was hospitalized 4 times at HUP …before he finally succumbed to this horrible virus. The main nurses involved in his last stay in the ICU were Mr. Evan Bosaczyk and Mr. Mike Cotter. These individuals are to be commended for going above and beyond what anyone could reasonably expect. Their compassion was evident daily when they went downstairs to buy P muffins or something else when the dietary offerings were not to his liking… Or went out of their way to help me wash his hair 4 hours before he died. They stayed with me at the bedside and literally held my hand while I experienced the worst moments of my life. I am a retired Army nurse so my standards are not that of the average layperson…time and time again Mike and Evan surpassed what could be reasonably expected coming in to check on both of us while I helplessly watched my husband slip away. I know they had other patients and responsibilities but made me feel as if we were their only concerns. Their courage and bravery in dealing with a patient with this lethal disease go without saying but I need to add my words of appreciation for them and their fearless endeavors. Please know that these individuals reflect great credit upon your institution and themselves. I am deeply in their debt and “Thank You” does not seem enough. But it is all I have…they were always happy to speak to me on the phone (and in person when I was allowed on the premises) and were so compassionate at the end. Their communication helped make the process so much more bearable. In short Mike and Evan were so kind to me when I was at my neediest... They are simply the best!

What an amazing and caring staff of nurses. Warm, friendly, caring, knowledgeable & compassionate. My son is a low-functioning Down’s Syndrome man. I would often find nurses interacting with him in a childish way that he felt comfortable with. This is so important since you don’t have many intellectually delayed patients there and they are very fearful in unfamiliar places. He had problems with his lungs so one of the NPs brought him bubbles. She also brought a truck with blocks to exercise his arms as he was sedated and tied down for 3-weeks plus. Nurse Anna also brought bubbles for him and also was the person who first got him sitting in a wheelchair – no easy feat. Anna was determined to get him in a more upright position to breathe easier and feel like a person – we pushed him around the unit in which was the best medicine. Nurse Emma was wonderful and Steve G., as they gave him the attention he craved as well as thinking outside the box to help him graduate to the 14th floor…. On the whole; skilled + teamwork + kindness + compassion + humor = BEST STAFF AND UNIT. Thank you.
