Today, in the WHWH-PACU, one of our patients, who despite receiving pain medication, repositioning, and other comfort measures continued to have unrelenting back pain. Melanie Lee, RN, recognized this patient's distress and offered to rub the patient's back. The patient responded with a definitive yes! Melanie proceeded with a very calm, reassuring soft spoken voice and the gentlest of hands to massage the patient's back. Within minutes the patient began to relax and the pain subsided. Melanie took the time to make this patient more comfortable.
