Melissa cared for a very young child with a broken leg. It was an uncomfortable situation for all involved, the mother (especially), the family, the students (who were involved) and the staff. Melissa handled this situation very professionally, without judgment, and gave the mother (who was really hurting), the kindness and empathy she deserved. Along with all of this, she had a student nurse observing and following her on this shift. She made such a fantastic impression on, how a mature and experienced nurse should be. Along with that, she also gave this child such compassionate and appropriate care dealing with his pain and situation. She also stayed late to make sure the family had the appropriate car seat set up to work for this child. A true example of family-centered care and holistic nursing. I'm very proud to have her work in this department and call her a peer!

I am a 3rd-semester student at CLC in the AD Nursing Program. I have begun clinical rotations in the OB department at Essentia Health St. Joseph's. I feel blessed to have shadowed with Melissa, one of the most caring nurses in this department. Melissa cares for her patients with all her heart. She is compassionate, knowledgeable, and very efficient. In school, we have been taught about nurses providing holistic care and Melissa is a prime example of this. Melissa was caring for a baby with a leg fracture who was in a lot of pain. She provided comfort for the child and the mother, explaining that both mother and baby are her patients. Melissa also had two other patients, another mom, and a child that afternoon whom she cared for also. Melissa is a true role model. As a student, I am thankful to have observed a nurse provide such unconditional care and I will cherish this experience forever.
