She provides them with the compassionate care and comfort they need to ease their minds during some of the scariest moments and goes above and beyond while doing so.
One of the hardest parts of being part of the Resource Team is that you rarely get the opportunity to take care of a patient more than once. This means that patients and patient families infrequently have the chance to get to know and recognize resource nurses the same way they do unit nurses. Resource nurses are a special breed of nurse who adapt and flex with the needs of the system and are ready to jump into any situation to contribute their knowledge and expertise. There is no better example of this than Meredith Johnson.

As a new graduate, Meredith started in the Pediatric Satellite Team as a float nurse which is the most challenging environment to start as a new graduate nurse. As she grew in her clinical skills and nursing judgment, she realized she wanted to know and see more, so she joined the Pediatric Resource Team to float to more acute settings like the Pediatric ICU and Neonatal ICU. Meredith was eager to be trained in the Pediatric ICU and readily accepted the challenge of caring for the highest acuity patient population. She invested in the PICU as if she is one of their nurses and shows a strong desire to further her professional growth to ensure she is providing this patient population of critically ill patients with the highest quality care. She takes initiative outside of what is required of her to obtain additional trauma hours and attend device training specific to the PICU. Meredith is always willing to flex and pivot in this fast-paced, constantly changing environment and will do anything that is asked of her to help provide these patients with the care they need in this high-stress moment always with a smile on her face.

In addition to her desire to learn, positive attitude, and flexibility, she is always a positive light for our patients and families. She provides them with the compassionate care and comfort they need to ease their minds during some of the scariest moments and goes above and beyond while doing so. She exemplifies all the qualities of an excellent nurse and if I could put a picture with the phrase “team player” it would be Meredith Johnson. The PICU will always welcome her with open arms when she gets floated to our unit. Furthermore, she has gone the extra step of volunteering to have students shadow her to pass on her knowledge to the next generation of nurses. She is an exceptional example of a Resource Nurse.
