Not only was he able to reassure the patient about the progress that he had made, but he went even further, going above and beyond to bring this patient items that the hospital didn't carry.
I witnessed this spectacular nurse really connect and communicate with the patient on a more personable level, meeting not only his medical needs but the patient's emotional needs as well. A very sweet but confused patient has been on our floor for one and a half months, walking up and down our halls asking various nurses about his discharge. On a particular day, Mike was not his nurse, but he took the time to just listen to him. That's all the patient wanted. The patient was asking about his discharge again, and Mike kindly explained that he could not look into his chart due to HIPAA, but if he could be so lucky to be his nurse, he would try to help even more. The patient responded back with hope on his face and said he’d love that! Mike agreed to be this patient's nurse and did exactly what he had promised. Mike contacted the provider and spent a significant amount of time with the provider, going over his very complex discharge. Not only was he able to reassure the patient about the progress that he had made, but he went even further, going above and beyond to bring this patient items that the hospital didn't carry. The patient was complaining about his long fingernails that he hadn't been able to cut in one and a half months! So, Mike brought him a nail file and other male toiletry products that the hospital did not carry. This patient was finally able to shower, file his nails, and for once be heard and seen as a person, not just a patient. This patient does not have any family or friends that can do this for him. Thank you, Mike, for giving this patient the hope and encouragement he needed.
