A couple of weeks ago I had to bring my son, C, into the ER because he had his first joint bleed. Carter is a Severe Type A Hemophiliac so I was well aware that this visit would happen, but it was still a hard visit with him being only 9 months old. This condition is quite rare so the staff was not very familiar with the condition or the treatment. When C has a bleed the Hemophilia Treatment Center of Green Bay helps us with communicating to health care staff on how to treat C. Michelle in the ER was C's nurse and she did an excellent job at communicating with his treatment center and taking directions from them for his treatment. I feel like she truly saw it as a learning experience and was very caring and comforting during the visit. The way she interacted with C was phenomenal.
We ended up having to come back a second day to receive another treatment and Michelle was working again. She requested that she take care of C because she knew about his condition and his treatment. She once again communicated with the Hemophilia Treatment Center and delivered treatment to him. She also taught another nurse about his condition and treatment. She had us in and out within an hour because of the knowledge of what she learned the previous day. She jumped right in and knew exactly what to do. She then proceeded to give us a call the next day to check on C and make sure that he was getting better.
Overall this experience was outstanding to me. As a mom of a 9-month-old who has Hemophilia, I have been dreading his first treatment since he was born and I was devastated to have to come to the ER. I did not want to see him get the IV treatment, but Michelle made it a breeze by having such empathy and being so caring. When we came back the second day I was quite relieved to see her again because I knew she would make it another visit to remember. Michelle went above and beyond for C and is a great role model for all nurses.
