She talked to me like a real person, not "just another patient." I will always remember how she would validate my concerns.
When I was hospitalized at Children's in 2020, I was at the most difficult point in my life. I was hoping and praying that my treatments would work and that I could get my life back. The person who encouraged me the most was one of my nurses, Shelly. She made sure that I was safe in the moments when I was upset and confused. She talked to me like a real person, not "just another patient." I will always remember how she would validate my concerns, never being dismissive. When I was under Shelly's care, I started to feel like things were going to get better, and they did. Shelly did a great job of communicating with my care team to meet my needs. Whether it was an issue with my central line, problems with medication, or struggles with my mental health, I knew I could trust Shelly to relay that information to the hospitalist, specialist, or anyone else that needed to know to be able to take better care of me. Shelly was there for me on my darkest days, and I know she is so very deserving of this award.
